What is Orsted Energy?
Orsted Energy Services Offered
In addition to its renewable energy services, Ørsted also offers services to the oil and gas sector. These include the complete development and operation of offshore wind farms and surveys, feasibility studies, and development of wind farms in onshore areas. Ørsted has also developed a concept for an offshore wind farm tied to an aquifer that allows for pumping water from the aquifer during off-peak times and injecting it into the ground during peak times when electricity prices are high.
In October 2018, Ørsted announced a resolution to phase out coal from its energy generation portfolio by 2022.
Orsted Energy Leadership
CEO Henrik Poulsen leads the company. His predecessor, one of the founders and then-CEO Lars Aagaard, left in May 2017 after merging with Danish Oil & Natural Gas Company (DONG). Current CEO Henrik Poulsen then replaced him.
Ørsted Energy has a strategic focus on offshore wind power and energy efficiency, smart grids, and energy storage. The company is organised in three business areas: Wind Power, Offshore Wind and Solutions & Innovation.
At the beginning of September 2017, Ørsted became the first wind-to-gas electricity producer globally to deliver gas from the ground below that of natural gas.
Energistyrelsen calculates the reference price of natural gas in Denmark as one-third of the European hub price.
By expanding its reach into new markets and applying technologies in areas where others are just starting to dip their toes, Ørsted is successfully growing and building an international company with an impressive track record.
In the last ten years, Ørsted’s global workforce has nearly doubled from 7,000 to over 14,000.
The company is also famous for its focus on employee engagement.
Orsted Energy Business Structure and Services
Ørsted Energy provides electricity and gas and services to domestic and international markets. The main focus is wind, with the company’s ambition to be Denmark’s leading wind power producer by 2030. The company has operations in many countries and is installing a new round of offshore turbines at the Horns Rev 2 project, which is currently under construction in the Danish sector of the North Sea. Ørsted also has a track record of developing smart grids and energy efficiency technologies and building large-scale energy storage projects for both consumer and industrial customers globally. The company is a partner at the privately-funded Risø research centre, which studies further developing wind power.
In the future, Ørsted Energy hopes to be building a global mix of renewable energies, storage technologies and services. The aim is for all operations to be profitable on their own and contribute to the group’s growth. The portfolio contains a range of new technologies, such as hydrogen power and natural gas-powered energy storage systems for pumped hydro energy storage. As well as conventional technologies such as power plants, offshore wind farms and completed onshore wind farms.
The portfolio also includes expanded roles in renewable energies. These include solar power plants in the Middle East, large-scale solar parks in China, U.S. states and Europe, and a solar project in Qatar. The company also targets power generation in the EU and markets outside Europe.
Sustainable Energy
Ørsted has a CO2 balance of zero and plans to be entirely carbon-neutral by 2023. The company is investing in developing a new wind power platform. This Hywind floating rotor system can produce clean energy in areas where it is challenging to install conventional turbines.
The portfoli o is built on three core activities: offshore wind power, natural gas and smart grid solutions. Two business areas, offshore wind and energy solutions, have a global scope. Ørsted Innovation, the commercialisation unit of the company, further supports the portfolio.
Orsted Energy – To Conclude
Ørsted’s activities in energy efficiency include building energy management solutions for industrial customers and solutions for e-commerce and consumer markets. Energy efficiency services include smart grid technology (TaaS), cloud-based services and training.
