Ecotricity
Ecotricity Limited is a well-established energy supplier company founded in 1996. Their mission is to eradicate the use of fossil fuels for energy and instead replace them with greener energy that does not disturb the natural processes of the environment. They do this through the use of wind parks that use turbines to convert wind energy into electricity and carbon-neutral initiatives like using organic matter to create biomethane to use instead of natural gases. Small, medium and large businesses can be benefitted from Ecotricity, as they have options for companies of all kinds.

Ecotricity Tariffs
Generally, green energy is cheaper than non-renewable energy because the price per unit of resources like oil and gas is higher than sustainable resources. So all of Ecotricity’s tariffs are less costly.
Ecotricity have different tariffs for their customers, the major ones being standard rates for their customers with contracts and out of contract rates for those that don’t. Out of contract rates are more expensive, the prices for electricity being £0.60p per kWh, whilst gas prices being £0.10p, in comparison to standard rates, which can be half of this unit price. Additionally, pay as you go customers are offered cheaper tariffs; this means that the meter is topped up for as much energy as you wish to and require, and when this is depleted, it can be topped up again. Alternatively, standard rates are more expensive.
Ecotricity also offers an Economical seven tariff, which targets those who use more electricity during the night at off-peak hours and utilise it during the day, ideal for those with storage heaters. The 12-7 am rates are cheaper whilst the rest of the day is more expensive, which is especially suited for those that do not demand energy during the daytime.
Types of Renewable Energy
Wind Power
Ecotricity is most well-known for its wind parks, where numerous windmills are installed in areas prone to strong air currents near the sea. The idea is for the wind to turn the turbine, and hence the kinetic energy is converted into electricity by a generator. This electricity can then be sustainably supplied to the customers, and any excess is sold to the National Grid. The energy company is proud to have constructed 24 wind farms to this day, where multiple windmills are installed to generate as much electricity as possible.
Unlike solar power, wind power can be made all day and night because of the continuous breeze, making it more reliable and generating more power.
Solar Power
Light energy from the sun can be captured through solar panels, otherwise known as photovoltaic modules. The photovoltaic cells act as semiconductors and convert the light energy into electrical energy, which is renewable and green, using the earth’s natural resources to power Britain’s homes instead of fossil fuels. Ecotricity has already built one sun park home to 5,000 solar panels and is building many more in the next year.
Moreover, they will be using ‘bifacial’ solar panels, which are coated with photovoltaic cells on both sides, so that light from both of the faces of the panels can be caught and converted, making them more efficient. This is a smart way to generate more electricity, to account for the inefficiency of solar power during the night when there is little to no light.
Green Gas
Ecotricity generates green gas with a carbon-neutral initiative. This means that even though carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere when the gas is generated, carbon dioxide is also taken in by the trees and grass which are planted. The process is done by combusting grass which releases biomethane, but growing grass to balance this out. Conventionally, biogas is produced through organic matter like an animal waste.
However, Ecotricity believes that this is unethical and using plants is a much more moral way of creating green gases. Ecotricity has the unique idea of using ‘vegan energy’ to make green gases created through anaerobic combustion to generate electricity or gas to heat homes, compared to other energy suppliers who use manure and slurry from animals like cows, pigs and chickens.
Ecotricity – To Conclude
In conclusion, Ecotricity believes in using fully green energy to power and heat the UK’s homes, strongly urging the community to switch to energy suppliers who use sustainable resources and do not use animal matter. Compared to the average energy supplier that offers approximately 40% renewable energy and the rest unrenewable, Ecotricity uses only renewable resources and emits just as much carbon dioxide and other waste gases as they absorb back into organic matter.
