What is Invoice Finance?
Invoice finance is a financial service that allows you to unlock the cash in your unpaid invoices. So, instead of waiting for customers to pay their invoices, you can receive a significant portion of the invoice value immediately from a lender, thus providing quick access to working capital and therefore helping you to manage cash flow more effectively.
How Does Invoice Finance Work?
The process of invoice finance typically follows these steps:
After delivering goods or services, you generally issue an invoice to the customer (as usual).
You then submit the invoice to an invoice finance provider and depending on your agreement, your provider can offer up to 90% of the invoice value upfront.
Once the invoice is approved, your finance provider advances the agreed percentage of the invoice value to you (usually within 24 to 48 hours).
The customer pays the invoice in full, typically within the standard payment terms (usually paid directly to the finance provider).
After receiving payment from the customer, the finance provider deducts their fees and the advance amount before remitting the balance to the business!
Types of Invoice Finance
There are several types of invoice finance and each of these tailors to different business needs, so are worth exploring:
Invoice factoring
In this arrangement, your finance provider manages the sales ledger and credit control, collecting payments directly from customers.
Our advice:
We think this option is ideal for businesses that prefer to outsource their accounts receivable management.
Invoice discounting
Unlike factoring, invoice discounting allows you to maintain control over the sales ledger and customer relationships and therefore, you are responsible for collecting payments, and your finance provider advances funds based on the value of the invoices.
Selective invoice finance
This option gives you the flexibility to choose which invoices to finance.
Our advice:
Selective invoice finance is ideal for businesses that only want to finance specific invoices rather than their entire ledger.
Benefits of Invoice Finance
It can improve your cash flow
It can be flexible to suit your business needs.
You can outsource yourcredit control, freeing up time and resources to focus on core activities.
Is Invoice Finance Right for Your Business?
Invoice finance can be a valuable tool for businesses that experience cash flow challenges due to delayed payments. We think that it’s particularly beneficial for growing companies, seasonal businesses, or those with extended payment terms. However, we feel it’s right to issue a warning here – it’s essential to consider the costs involved, as your fees can vary depending on the provider and the type of service.
To summarise, we think that invoice finance offers a practical solution for businesses looking to improve cash flow without taking on traditional debt, but you need to weigh up the pros and cons of the overall costs involved.
