Smart Card Machine: How Does it Work?
Similar to a USB stick but with a memory chip and microprocessor inside.
It can read and write data from its memory storage while protecting stored information against unauthorised access. Smart cards come in two varieties – contact and contactless.
Both require inserting into a reader, but their methods differ slightly.
First, the card must have a contact pad on its surface, connected to a reader via a conductive touchpoint (such as a POS terminal or ATM). This physical connection enables commands and data transfer between the card and the reader. Second, the card must be able to communicate with the reader using an APDU format. This communication protocol enables the card to process and pass its data onto the reader, who, in turn, passes it back to its originator. This allows users to carry out transactions without needing cash on hand.
Smart Card Machine: Security
It’s safer and more secure than carrying around large amounts of cash. Smart card technology has revolutionised the world, making life simpler, faster, and more convenient.
It enables people to do things they once couldn’t – shop without needing cash in their pockets, take advantage of discounts at restaurants, and even pay their electricity bills from home!
Smart cards offer a secure and dependable method for conducting transactions at affordable prices, making them an integral part of our lives.
Their use will remain widespread for years to come. Traditional credit cards, which consist of plastic cards with a magnetic stripe in the middle, must be updated with technology.
Smart Card Machine: Benefits
Smart cards are mini computers equipped with operating systems and microprocessors. You can program them to do whatever you wish with the information it stores – including storing passwords, reading data, writing to it, rewriting data or editing at will. Smart cards are highly portable; they don’t need a screen or keyboard and can operate without power.
This makes them ideal for storing data and transferring money over the Internet. The primary distinction between a smart card and a credit card is that a smart card reader must read and write to it; however, credit cards require their reader. This reader may either be an external device plugging into a PC’s serial port or part of a USB-based keyboard or PDA.
