Cybersecurity and Remote Working: The Ultimate Guide

Remote work has changed the way we approach work, and it gives us endless flexibility…but it also comes with new risks – especially relating to cyber security. Cybercriminals target remote workers with sophisticated attacks, making it essential for you to adopt robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive data and prevent breaches.

Understanding the Cybersecurity Risks of Remote Work

We think the main challenges you’re likely to encounter in a remote work environment are:

Phishing attacks

This is because employees working remotely are prime targets for phishing emails (which attempt to trick them into revealing sensitive information or downloading nasty malware).

Unsecured Wi-Fi networks

Did you know that working from home, in cafés or in public spaces increases the risk of data interception by cyber criminals?

Weak passwords

In addition, inadequate password management can lead to unauthorised access to your company systems.

Unpatched software and devices

Outdated software and operating systems can contain vulnerabilities that hackers know how to exploit.

Lost or stolen devices

Laptops, tablets, and mobile phones used for remote work can be misplaced or stolen, which naturally increases the risk of data breaches.

How to Strengthen Cybersecurity for Remote Work

To mitigate these risks, we suggest incorporating these cybersecurity best practices into your toolkit:

a. Enforce strong password policies and multi-factor authentication (MFA)

This requires employees to use unique, complex passwords for work accounts.
You implement MFAs to add an extra layer of security when accessing company systems.
You could also encourage the use of password managers to store credentials securely.

b. Secure devices and networks

Ensure all work devices have up-to-date antivirus software and firewalls enabled.
Require your employees to connect via a VPN when accessing company data.
Don’t forget to educate staff on the dangers of using public Wi-Fi and encourage using mobile hotspots or secured networks.

c. Implement endpoint security and device management

This is because EDR tools monitor and protect company devices.
You should restrict your employees from installing unauthorised applications as these could easily introduce security vulnerabilities.

d. Keep your software updated

Establish a policy for regular software updates and security patches.
Get your staff always to enable automatic updates.
Regularly audit and remove outdated or unsupported software.

e. Educate and train employees on cybersecurity awareness

You should conduct regular cybersecurity training sessions to help employees recognise threats (like phishing emails and social engineering attacks).
Simulate phishing attacks to test and reinforce employee awareness.
And then provide your team with clear guidance on how to report suspicious activity or potential security incidents.

f. Implement access controls

You should always restrict access to sensitive data based on job roles and responsibilities.
Regularly review and update access permissions as employees change roles or leave the company.

g. Establish a clear remote work security policy

Develop a formal cybersecurity policy outlining your businesses best practices, acceptable use guidelines, and security your protocols.
You should require employees to acknowledge and sign this policy before beginning remote work, or as you update it.
Remember to regularly update these policies to address emerging cybersecurity threats.

h. Ensure secure data storage and backup procedures

Use cloud-based storage solutions with end-to-end encryption to protect your sensitive files.
Regularly back up company data to secure off-site locations.
Also be sure to have disaster recovery and incident response plans in place to minimise data loss in case of a cyberattack.

The Role of IT Consultants in Strengthening Cybersecurity for SMEs

For SMEs without an in-house cybersecurity team, we suggest partnering with an IT consultant as they can help you with the following:

They will conduct security assessments to identify vulnerabilities and risks.
They can help you to implement industry-standard cybersecurity solutions tailored to remote work environments.
They will give you ongoing cybersecurity training for employees.
They will always offer managed security services to monitor and respond to cyber threats proactively.
