White Fairtrade Sugar Vs Organic Non-GMO Sugar

If you’re not sure what Fairtrade sugar is, you might want to start with these definitions. Organic means sugar that isn’t genetically modified, and sustainable means sugar that hasn’t been exposed to harmful chemicals. However, non-GMO and sustainable means sugar is grown using the least amount of water possible.
Fairtrade sugar isn’t just white.
You’ve probably seen the term “fairtrade” on organic and natural foods labels, but did you know there’s also a variety of other types of sugar available? Fairtrade sugar is a form of certified organic sugar produced in developing countries.
It’s available from various sources, including Tony’s Chocolonely and Ben & Jerry’s. And now, more companies are offering it in stores. This sugar covers the living costs of the farmers and includes a “social premium”, which helps fund social projects that are agreed upon by the farmers themselves. Organic sugar cane is also paid an additional premium.
It’s not organic.
Sugar must be sourced from beets or cane grown by farmers using organic practices to be certified organic. These methods improve water quality, preserve wildlife, and protect the soil. The USDA or another certifying agency must certify sugar products before being sold as organic.
A fine of up to £17,952 is imposed if a company sells sugar without this certification. It’s not sustainable sugar is a complicated commodity grown in developed and developing countries. It has historically been subject to epic levels of protectionism. In Europe, preferential subsidies for sugar producers encourage overproduction, dumped onto developing world markets.
It’s not non-GMO
While you may think that white fairtrade sugar is non-GMO, this is not the case. Sugar labelled as non-GMO and has a Fairtrade label is made by small-scale farmers who don’t use child or forced labour. Furthermore, Fairtrade products must improve soil fertility and biodiversity. In addition, some farmers grow sugarcane outside of monoculture systems, such as shade-producing bananas or cocoa.
It helps prevent diseases. Fairtrade certified sugar is available in the US and is used to create preserves, jams, and other food products. In turn, the premiums paid by consumers fund projects that help people in the communities in which it is grown. In Paraguay, for example, farmers have used Fair Trade premiums to drill two wells, providing clean drinking water to villages there. They’ve also used some of their profits to bring electricity to the village of Chinangwa and are currently working on a school.
It’s not a health product.
While white fairtrade sugar may be sold in the United States, that label does not mean that it is organic or produced in the USA. Instead, it could be simply raw cane sugar imported from a foreign country refined in the USA. The lack of traceability in the sugar production process makes it difficult for consumers to connect with social and environmental issues. Despite the premium that “fairtrade” sugar carries, this is not a health product.
