Amazon’s Stock Waste Destruction Practices in the UK
Amazon has come under fire for the way it disposes of millions of unsold stock items every year, resulting in huge Stock Waste. A recent ITV investigation revealed the shocking practices behind the company’s warehouses. In a series of tweets, environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg condemned Amazon’s practices, and ITV reported on lorries carrying unsold stock from a Scottish warehouse. A former worker at one of the UK warehouses revealed that the company targets 130,000 unopened items a week for destruction. Only a tiny portion of these items are donated to charity; the rest are bundled and labelled as “destroyed.”

Stock Waste: Warehouse Disposal
Amazon’s warehouse disposal of millions of items of unsold stock every year A shocking video filmed inside Amazon’s Scottish distribution centre has exposed the secretive way that millions of unsold items are disposed of. The video showed piles of unused, new items, including thousands of sealed face masks. The items are sorted into trucks and sent to landfills and recycling facilities. Cnbc also reported on this, which you can read here.
The ITV news investigation revealed that the company was destroying millions of items of stock every year. According to the investigation, around 1.3 million items are discarded yearly from Amazon’s warehouses. The company has been criticised for this practice, and its “hire to fire” policy, and employees have complained about the conditions. Despite the controversy, the company has maintained that the numbers of items disposed of are minimal.
It said that it is only when a product is no longer in demand that it is sent to landfills. Moreover, Amazon will offer third-party sellers another chance to sell their products. In addition to this initiative, Amazon has also started a facility to recycle unsold stock.
Stock Waste Disposal methods
There are many methods of destroying stock waste, including shredding and incineration. This method can also destroy documents; some items can even be recycled. Stock waste management companies can assess the types of products you have that need to be destroyed and arrange the most appropriate disposal method for each.
The company has a highly successful business model, and many vendors choose to house their products in its warehouses. But because Amazon charges a higher rate to keep unsold items, destroying these items is a cheaper option than storing them. Environmental organisations, including Greenpeace, have criticised this practice.
The government and industry should continue to work together to find ways to reduce waste and increase the environmental impact of their organisations. The first step in reducing waste is educating staff and managers about reducing the number of resources and paper used. Once these measures are in place, trusts can begin investing those savings into front-line patient care.
Certificate of Destruction
Certificate of destruction is a legal requirement for all waste management companies that deal with end-of-life vehicles. The document confirms that the vehicles have been destroyed safely and correctly and helps prevent the company from receiving fines and other legal action. It is issued by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and is valid only for Authorised Treatment Facilities.
There are different methods of stock waste destruction, including shredding documents, incineration and physical destruction. A company specialising in stock waste destruction will assess the type of waste you generate and then plan the most appropriate way to dispose of it properly. Sometimes, even damaged stock can be recycled. Data destruction is necessary for GDPR compliance, and a certificate proves that you destroyed the data correctly.
The certificate also provides proof that the company followed the proper procedures to prevent leakage and misuse of proprietary company information. There are three main types of data destruction, and a certificate must accompany each.
Amazon’s response to ITV investigation
In the wake of the ITV investigation, Amazon has said it will not destroy goods it can’t sell. Instead, it will recycle them. This will reduce the waste the company has to dispose of and save the environment. The company runs 175 centres worldwide, covering 150 million square feet of space.
After the ITV investigation, British lawmakers have demanded a meeting with Amazon’s country manager to discuss the issue. It was revealed that the e-commerce giant had binned millions of unsold items annually. The investigation focused on a Scottish distribution centre, where 124,000 items a week are disposed of.
