Santa Claus Insurance
Being a Santa Claus performer or actor means you are responsible for bringing joy and cheer to people’s private homes, the retail spaces of businesses and maybe even company parties sometimes. There’s a whole wide range of professions out there, but there are perhaps none that are more fun than that of Santa Claus. Read on to find out why Santa Claus insurance is so important.

Santa Claus Insurance
Every time you get into the costume, you’re taking on a lot of responsibility as Santa, especially considering how many people hold Father Christmas so close to their hearts. You might be performing in a very public open space or a far cosier personal area, but the possibility is always going to remain that something could go wrong.
This is why, despite all the positive feelings people have towards Santa, it’s essential that protections are made against worst-case scenarios and that you do your research to make sure you have insurance in the areas where you need it. Not doing so could prove disastrous for both your clients and your livelihood.
Types of Santa Claus Insurance
1. Public liability insurance
The main one that may be worth looking into as a Santa performer is public liability insurance. There may be an unfortunate incident when you’re posing for pictures at the front of a line of children when one particularly wriggly child, through no fault of your own, fights their way to the floor. In such an instance, you can find yourself at risk of being held personally responsible for any injuries such a fall could cause.
Working with children is always risky since, in the vast majority of cases, they’re just not great at keeping themselves safe or looking after themselves yet. Even if you’re the safest and most experienced person in the world, you’re never going to be able to ultimately ensure that you can prevent every child from hurting themselves. With their excitement and immaturity comes an element of unpredictability that you’re never going to be able to prepare for entirely. This is why public liability insurance is essential for people who regularly work with kids, such as Santa Claus performers. It benefits you in two main ways.
The first of these is that when a mistake does happen, and a claim is made against you, you can find yourself being held responsible and consequentially being told to pay compensation. This can be a huge financial shock that most people aren’t prepared for. You can budget accordingly by having public liability insurance and knowing you have a small regular amount being debited each month. Then when something does go wrong, your insurer will cover the payout cost. In the long term, this is a much safer option financially. The other benefit is that your insurer will handle the legal side of such processes.
Having to get overly involved and manage the whole process yourself can end up eating into hours of your time, hours that could be spent working. In this regard, public liability insurance is a financially savvy decision in two ways. Leave the legal stuff to people who are trained in such matters, and you can focus on bringing joy to people and working on the livelihood you picked out.
2. Employers’ liability insurance
There are a few other policies out there that will be worth looking at and chewing over too. If your act includes an employee, you’ll need to look at employers’ liability insurance. This plays a very similar role to public liability insurance, except it relates to incidents involving employees rather than public members.
This is required for anyone with employees by law in most countries, including the United Kingdom, so you must start looking for a provider if you don’t have one already or if you’re hoping to expand your activities to include another employee soon. There’s no need to be too upset about the fact that it’s mandatory, however. This is because even if it weren’t, we’d seriously recommend it since it keeps you, your employees and your livelihood all a lot safer in many of the same ways that public liability insurance does.
3. Contents insurance
It may also be worth looking into contents insurance if there are some invaluable parts of your act that you can’t do without. This policy will help cover the costs should these things get damaged or stolen, and some policies will even guarantee the speed of replacement. This is especially important in this occupation when you’re on a short time frame to make the most of the few weeks a year where Santa Claus performers are in demand.
