Company History
Huntley & Palmers, The history of the biscuit company, dates back to 1822 when Huntley & Palmers was founded in Reading. The company’s founder, Joseph Huntley, was a Quaker schoolmaster, and his son, Thomas, joined the business in 1829. After his father’s retirement in 1838, Thomas operated under his name and partnered with fellow Quaker George Palmer. George Palmer was a well-known politician and a future MP. In 1911, the Huntley and Palmers brand provided emergency biscuits for the British Antarctic Expedition.
In 1912, the company supplied army biscuits and artillery shell cases for the First World War. It is believed that Huntley & Palmers’ biscuits were given to Sir Francis Younghusband, the first European to reach the Forbidden Kingdom.
In 1916, Sir Francis Younghusband ate a delicious cake of Huntley & Palmers biscuits as a welcome gift to his new home.
Reducing plastic packaging and recyclability of biscuits
The company is committed to improving its product’s recyclability and reducing its plastic packaging. To improve recyclability and reduce its plastic use, it will launch an innovative new range of biscuits made with up to 90% recycled material. Packaging is the leading cause of waste, as the average person in Europe produces 175kg of plastic per year. Increasing public awareness of sustainable production and consumption is encouraging some manufacturers to develop and supply products made from recycled content.
Consumers will also value the recyclability and recycling of the product as long as they can confirm that it is recyclable. However, if companies claim that their products are 100% recyclable, this can detract from consumer confidence. A range of innovative methods have been tested to reduce the overall impact of plastic packaging. These innovative methods include new materials and packaging methods that help reduce waste while allowing consumers to select products with the highest recycling rates.
In addition to improving recyclability, the new packaging reduces the amount of food in landfills. The packaging can also help reduce food waste and the breakage of products overall.
