History of Broadcom
It was founded by a professor-student pair from California (University of California, Los Angeles) named Henry Samueli and Henry Nicholas in 1991.
Broadcom Corporation is now a Fortune 500 company and employs over 11,000 people worldwide in more than 15 countries. The founders will undoubtedly be proud of the company’s success now, with Broadcom’s total revenue reaching a staggering £8 billion in 2012.
It is among the world’s top 10 semiconductor vendors by revenue.
This industry is increasingly becoming the forefront of economic planning and politics as it plays a crucial role in developing critical modern technologies such as mobile phones and computers.
In 2015 Broadcom was bought for an astounding £37 billion by Avago Technologies, which manufactures chips.
Until 2016 the company had an impressive IoT (Internet of Things) portfolio. IoT is predicted by many to boom in the coming years as previously unimpressive objects (by modern standards) become controllable from people’s mobile phones and smart speakers.
That year, Cypress Semiconductor bought this portfolio from Broadcom for £550 million. This included Broadcom’s physical products and intellectual property for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and ZigBee connectivity.
Since 2007 the company has been involved in several legal wranglings, particularly about manufactured microchips used in various cell phone models.
In 2007, competitor Qualcomm was hit by the news that cell phone models based on their chips would be blocked from import to the United States. This was because the U.S. International Trade Commission had found that the phone’s chips were based on infringed on Broadcom’s patents.
The issue was settled in 2009 when Qualcomm agreed to pay £891 million in cash to Broadcom over four years until June 2013.

Broadband Access Solutions
Broadcom, with one of the industry’s most extensive IP portfolios and significant product experience in broadband applications, offers a comprehensive range of broadband access solutions. These solutions address the challenges faced in the “last mile” for global service providers. From broadband modem ICs designed for customer premises to CMTS/CCAP, DSLAM, and OLT SoC platform solutions for operator broadband infrastructure, Broadcom’s products empower global service providers to deploy next-generation broadband access technologies across multiple standards. This facilitates the delivery of increased bandwidth and faster data speeds to consumers worldwide.
Delivering broadband data to end consumers requires a robust and high-bandwidth infrastructure that ensures reliable data transmission from service provider networks to access points. The main obstacles preventing consumers from accessing gigabit broadband services often lie in the “last mile” links between customer premises and operator broadband infrastructure. Across cable, DSL, and fiber infrastructure, various leading technology implementations enable high-data-rate broadband in this “last mile,” each with its own technical and cost challenges.
